Eligibility

Applicants for Year 7 must be boys eligible for their normal age group and assessed suitable for grammar education through the Kent procedure for entrance to secondary education. A boy with an education, health and care plan naming Dartford Grammar School is admitted where grammar-school education is considered suitable. Test registration and the home local-authority school application are separate steps.

Score policy

The Kent Test uses age-standardised English, mathematics and reasoning scores. Applicants must first receive a grammar-school assessment. Dartford's priority categories then use score margins above the current Kent qualifying threshold and rank eligible applicants by total score. The September 2027 qualifying threshold will not be known until October 2026, so no numeric threshold is published here and meeting grammar eligibility does not guarantee an offer.

Oversubscription

After eligible education, health and care plans naming the school, 130 places are allocated through the defined priority area and 50 without an address restriction. Each quota prioritises looked-after and previously looked-after children, then a limited number of eligible pupil-premium applicants meeting the policy's score margin, before the remaining eligible boys. The priority-area quota also uses a higher score margin for its remaining applicants. Applicants are ranked by total Kent Test score, with straight-line distance used for ties. The policy criterion text and appendix conflict on the year of the pupil-premium supporting-evidence deadline, so this catalog does not assert that school-specific deadline.

1. 1. English and mathematics paper

   Approximately one hour, with separate English and mathematics sections. Each section includes about five minutes of practice followed by about 25 minutes of test questions.

2. 2. Reasoning paper

   Approximately one hour including practice. It covers verbal reasoning and individually timed non-verbal and spatial-reasoning sections.

3. 3. Writing exercise

   A 40-minute writing exercise including 10 minutes of planning. It is not marked for the Kent Test score but can be considered by a headteacher assessment panel.
