Eligibility

Applicants for Year 7 must be boys eligible for their normal age group and assessed suitable for grammar education through the Kent procedure for entrance to secondary education. A boy with an education, health and care plan naming Dartford Grammar School is admitted where grammar-school education is considered suitable. Test registration and the home local-authority school application are separate steps.

Score policy

The Kent Test uses age-standardised English, mathematics and reasoning scores. Applicants must first receive a grammar-school assessment. Dartford's priority categories then use score margins above the current Kent qualifying threshold and rank eligible applicants by total score. The September 2027 qualifying threshold will not be known until October 2026, so no numeric threshold is published here and meeting grammar eligibility does not guarantee an offer.

The 130-place priority-area category uses the child's only or main residence on the application-completion date. Shared-residence cases use where the child sleeps for most weekdays. Evidence may be requested. This is a named ward/parish boundary, not a postcode district or radius. Area applicants are also ranked in the all-address category; ask the admissions authority to confirm the full address.

Eligible EHCP-named boys are admitted before the categories. Category 1 has 130 priority-area places: looked-after or previously looked-after boys; up to 13 Pupil Premium boys scoring at least 20 above the Kent Test threshold; then boys scoring at least 40 above it. Unused premium places pass to score ranking; unfilled area places pass to Category 2. Category 2 has 50 places regardless of address, including area residents: looked-after or previously looked-after boys first; up to five Pupil Premium boys scoring at least 20 above the threshold; then other eligible boys. Each subgroup ranks by total score, then straight-line NLPG home-to-school distance. Pupil Premium covers Free School Meals in the previous six years and excludes universal infant meals. The supplementary form requires written eligibility confirmation from the primary school. Its deadline is 31 October 2026, but the main text says 31 October 2025: confirm the deadline with the school. Do not treat these relative score thresholds as a confirmed numeric pass mark.

   Approximately one hour, with separate English and mathematics sections. Each section includes about five minutes of practice followed by about 25 minutes of test questions.

   Approximately one hour including practice. It covers verbal reasoning and individually timed non-verbal and spatial-reasoning sections.

3. 3. Writing exercise

   A 40-minute writing exercise including 10 minutes of planning. It is not marked for the Kent Test score but can be considered by a headteacher assessment panel.
