Selection route

  • Kent Test

Local authority selection test · GL Assessment · Paper-based multiple-choice tests with separate answer sheets, followed by an unmarked writing exercise

English, mathematics and reasoning results are age-standardised. Kent sets an aggregate threshold and minimum component scores for each test year. The September 2027 thresholds are not yet published, a grammar assessment does not guarantee a school place, and each school applies its own admissions criteria when oversubscribed.

Eligibility
Year-7 day candidates must be grammar assessed through Kent PESE; Year-9 boarding candidates use the Cranbrook Entrance Exam and boarding suitability interview.
Score policy
Year-7 day candidates are ranked by final Kent PESE aggregate score; no numeric school cutoff published. Year-9 boarding pass mark is cohort-dependent and candidates rank by final mean mark.
Registration
GIAS does not publish the current test registration URL.

Who gets priority

Published area: Civil parishes of Cranbrook and Sissinghurst, Goudhurst, Staplehurst, Frittenden, Benenden, Sandhurst and Hawkhurst, Other properties outside those parish boundaries within 8.5 kilometres of the school by straight line.

This combines the listed civil parishes with the 8.5 km rule for other properties; it is not just a radius or a list of postcode districts. KCC uses National Land and Property Gazetteer address points, with special arrangements for unregistered properties. Ask the admissions authority to confirm the full address. The permanent principal private residence at applications close determines membership. Sections 3.3-3.10 set shared-residence, address-evidence and change-of-address requirements. The school map is guidance only.

For Year 7 day entry, eligible EHCP-named admissions come before the published categories: looked-after or previously looked-after children; priority-area Pupil Premium children; priority-area evidenced social-need applicants; priority-area siblings at the point of admission; qualifying staff children; other priority-area residents; then applicants outside the area. Pupil Premium covers Free School Meals in the previous six years, excluding universal infant meals alone. Premium and social-need claims require the relevant form or application by 31 October 2026 and supporting evidence; a CAF naming the school is also required. Staff must work at least half-time and have two years of service at application and/or fill a demonstrable shortage post. Kent Test grammar-assessed applicants are ranked using aggregate score and these categories; equal scores use NLPG straight-line distance, then independently supervised random selection. This summary is for day places; boarding has a separate policy.

For September 2027 entry. Policy checked 2026-10-01. A priority category does not guarantee an offer.
