Work out or check a score

Choose your area or test, enter the scores from the results letter, and the calculator checks them against the published threshold. It works in your browser and nothing you enter is sent anywhere.

A threshold is not an offer

Reaching a qualifying score makes a child eligible. Places are then given by each school's own oversubscription rules, such as distance or a priority area, so a qualifying score is not a promise of a place.

How each area works out the score

Exact where the board publishes its method. Where this year's threshold is not out yet, the latest published one is shown with its year.

Essex (CSSE)

Children sit an English paper and a maths paper. Each raw mark is standardised against everyone who sat the paper, an age allowance is added for each day a child is younger than the oldest in the year group, and the two results are added and multiplied by 1.5. The results email gives the raw marks and the total standardised score, and CSSE publishes that year's formula shortly after results day.

Kent Test

Children get three age-standardised scores, for English, maths and reasoning, and a total (aggregate) of the three. A grammar assessment needs a total at or above the threshold with no single score below the minimum; Kent sets both for each test year.

Medway Test

Each paper is age-standardised, then weighted: English twice, maths twice and reasoning once, added together. Medway ranks children from its maintained schools by that total and assesses about the top 26% as grammar; children from other schools must reach the same pass mark.

Buckinghamshire

The Secondary Transfer Test reports one age-standardised score, weighted 50% verbal, 25% maths and 25% non-verbal. A score of 121 or more qualifies for grammar school. The score is not used to rank children when a school is oversubscribed.

Birmingham (King Edward VI)

The West Midlands test scores are age-standardised and weighted 50% English and verbal reasoning, 25% non-verbal reasoning and 25% maths. There is no single pass mark across the partnership: each school sets its own qualifying score and oversubscription rules.

Slough

GL Assessment standardises the scores. A standardised score of 111 or above meets the common eligibility standard, which does not guarantee a place: each school applies its own oversubscription rules.

Lincolnshire

The two consortium tests are standardised to find the required ability range. Each member school applies its own qualifying policy, so check the school's admissions policy for its figure.

Sutton (SET)

The two Selective Eligibility Test papers are age-standardised and added together. The schools decide their pass marks after marking, and each school may set its own. Children who pass are told they met the standard but are not given their scores.

Frequently asked questions

Can I turn a GL raw mark into a standardised score?

There is no reliable universal conversion. You need the standardisation method, reference data and age adjustment for that particular test. A raw percentage alone is not enough. Use the standardised scores on your official results letter unless the test administrator publishes a calculation you can reproduce.

Which 11+ scores can the calculator work out exactly?

CSSE raw marks can reproduce a total only when the published means, spreads and age allowances match the test year. Until that year’s figures are available, this calculator labels its use of earlier figures as an estimate. Kent and Medway totals use the standardised component scores from your letter. Elsewhere it checks your reported score against a published threshold.

What if this year's pass mark is not published yet?

The calculator says so and compares the score with the most recent published figure, labelled with the year it applied to. Treat that comparison as a guide only: thresholds and allocation rules can change between entry years.

Does reaching the qualifying score guarantee a place?

No. A qualifying score makes a child eligible. Places are given by each school's oversubscription rules, such as distance or a priority area.

After the results

This calculator repeats published methods; it does not predict a result or a place. The board's own letter is always the official score. If anything here differs from your letter or the official page, the official version is right.
