  Two in-person multiple-choice papers, English and Maths, held by all six participating schools at the same time on Tuesday 15 September 2026; candidates are allocated a test centre.

  The two paper results are combined as a total score with no negative marking. Participating schools set their pass mark after marking; a pass is not an offer. Greenshaw uses the outcome for its ability places, while the five grammar schools use it to invite candidates to school-specific second-stage tests.

Boys must register for and pass Sutton Grammar School's SET, take the invited second stage test, meet the required combined standard, and name Sutton Grammar School on the home local authority Common Application Form.

Score policy

The SET and second stage English and mathematics marks are age and IDACI adjusted and combined to determine the required standard and rank order; the policy does not publish a fixed numeric qualifying score.
