Naming a point between 0 and 1

Point C is marked on the number line. Which fraction is equivalent to the value at C?

Each small step is worth 0.125, so counting the steps names the point.

  2. 18
  3. 110
  4. 17

Answer: 18

How you get there

The line from 0 to 1 is cut into 8 equal steps, and C sits 1 step along, which means it is 1 out of 8 of the way - written as 18.

Why the other answers tempt

The number of steps counted is the top of the fraction, not the bottom.

Count the small steps from 0 up to C; the line is split into 8 equal steps between 0 and 1.

Every zoom cuts one gap into ten equal pieces. Between 3 and 4 sit the tenths (3.4), and between 3.4 and 3.5 sit the hundredths (3.47). Decimals never run out - you can always zoom in and split again, which is exactly what each new place-value column means.

What to say if they get stuck

  1. Drag the line left and right to travel. Use + to magnify.
  2. 3.47 lives between 3.4 and 3.5 - zoom until you can see the little hundredth ticks in that gap.
  3. From 3.4, count 7 tiny ticks to the right. That is 3.47.

Triple Track

Drive the bar to 38, then work out the same amount as a percentage.

38 shades 3 of the 8 pieces of the bar. Dividing 3 by 8 gives exactly 0.375, and "per cent" just means "out of a hundred", so multiplying by 100 gives 37.5%. The three lanes stop at the same place on the board because they are not three amounts: they are one amount written three ways. Nothing was rounded anywhere - 3 divided by 8 stops dead after three decimal places.

  2. Step 2. Under the flap. Two lanes are covered. 38 is what percentage?

What to say if they get stuck

  1. Drag any lane and all three move together - they are one amount wearing three names.
  2. 38 means the whole is cut into 8 equal pieces and you take 3.
  3. Per cent means "out of a hundred". Fill the hundred square and count the cells.
