Naming the fraction a bar shows

What fraction of bar A is shaded?

The whole bar is 9 parts, and 5 of them are shaded.

  • A bar cut into 9 equal parts, with 5 of them shaded.

Answer: 59

How you get there

Bar A is divided into 9 equal parts and 5 of them are shaded, so the fraction shaded is 59. The 4 unshaded parts are not the bottom number: the bottom number counts the whole bar.

Why the other answers tempt

Comparing the 5 shaded parts with the 4 unshaded ones gives 54, which compares two parts of the bar rather than a part with the whole.

Count every part the bar is divided into for the bottom number, then count only the shaded parts for the top one.

What usually goes wrong here

  • Treats unequal parts as equal fractional parts.

This is the wrong answer 11+ papers are built to offer, so it is worth watching for directly: a child who does this will look confident and still lose the mark. If it keeps happening on identify a represented fraction, the fix is the misunderstanding rather than more questions.
