Selection route

  • West Midlands Grammar Schools Entrance Test

Shared test group · GL Assessment · Two paper-based multiple-choice papers, each approximately 50 to 60 minutes including instructions and examples, with individually timed sections and separate answer sheets

Scores are age-standardised and weighted 50 per cent for English and verbal reasoning, 25 per cent for non-verbal reasoning and 25 per cent for mathematics. There is no single route-wide offer threshold: each partner school applies its own qualifying scores and oversubscription rules. Sitting or passing the shared test does not guarantee an offer.

    Official registration page
Eligibility
Children in the normal age range for September 2027 entry must take the shared West Midlands Grammar Schools Entrance Test and achieve at least the qualifying score published for the school. A child with an education, health and care plan naming the school must also meet the required academic standard. Test registration and the home local-authority common application form are separate steps.
Score policy
The shared test produces age-standardised verbal, numerical and non-verbal results. Five Ways publishes a qualifying score and a higher priority score before the test. Use the Foundation’s current results guidance for its published figures. Achieving either score makes the relevant oversubscription category available but does not by itself guarantee an offer.

These are the electoral wards named in the 2027 policy. Catchment applies to categories 2 and 4, not every applicant. Ask the relevant council to confirm the full home address and ward; do not infer membership from a postcode or school-coordinate distance. The shared-care home is where the child lives for most of the week. Address changes after 31 October 2026 are considered after March 2027 offers.

EHCP-named admissions reduce the places available to others; the policy expects qualifying-score evidence during statutory consultation, so confirm the child’s case with the authority. The normal Year 7 order is: care status with the qualifying score, ranked by score then distance; in-catchment Pupil Premium with the qualifying score, ranked by distance; outside-catchment premium with that score only if needed to top up category 2 offers to 25% of places, rounded to the nearest whole number, ranked by score then sibling then distance; in-catchment applicants with the priority score, continuing older sibling first then distance; remaining qualifying-score applicants, ranked by score then sibling then distance. The 25% top-up is within the intake; category 2 is not capped at 25%. Care includes previous care and adoption after overseas state care. Premium requires primary-school funding at the entrance test and an eligibility form before test day; later evidence waits until after March 2027 allocations. A sibling must share the address under the policy’s family definition and continue in September 2027, including Sixth Form. Distance is straight-line in metres from OS home coordinates to the front gates. An inseparable last-place tie, including twins/flats, uses the council’s computerised random selection if admitting all would exceed PAN. Shared care uses the majority-week home with evidence. Registration was due 4pm on 26 June 2026, adjustment requests 12 June, and the separate CAF 31 October 2026; later applications/address changes wait until after March offers. The first-term waiting list uses these criteria for qualified children without this or a higher-preference offer. From January, in-year vacancies use a new test and the highest score above a minimum standard. The policy defers numeric qualifying/priority scores to the Foundation; no number is inferred here.

For September 2027 entry. Policy checked 2026-10-01. A priority category does not guarantee an offer.

Registration routes and shared dates

Use the registration route shown for the child's real home address, then account for every school you intend to name. The home address is used to allocate a test centre. If an intended school is outside that registration region, select its partnership region for score-sharing before the deadline. The groups below are not alternatives: route-specific and school-specific dates can apply cumulatively, while shared result, preference-form and offer dates apply across multiple groups.
