Take the value of the Draughts bar and divide it by 5.

Each bar shows the number of players recorded for that game.

How you get there

The Draughts bar shows 65, so 65÷5=13, which means splitting that bar into 5 equal groups gives 13 players in each group.

Calculate with the numbers the bars show, not with the number of bars on the chart.

Pop the Number

Pop every multiple of 7. Leave the impostors floating.

Multiples of 7 have no neat digit trick, unlike 2, 5 or 10, so this one is pure recall plus a check. Run up the table in steps of 7 and see whether your number appears: 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, 56, 63, 70. If it does not appear, it is not a multiple, however close it looks. The traps here were 27 (just under 28), 40 (between 35 and 42), 44 (between 42 and 49) and 54 (between 49 and 56). When you are unsure, find the nearest multiple you do know and count on in sevens from there.

What to say if they get stuck

  1. Say the seven times table under your breath: 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, 56, 63, 70.
  2. A number is a multiple of 7 only if 7 divides into it with nothing left over.
  3. Watch out for the near misses. 27, 40, 44 and 54 all sit between two multiples of 7 without being one.

Brackets come first, so 17+64=81 before anything else happens. That leaves the rest of the line to finish, and (17+64)÷9+9×8 comes to 81. Reading it straight from left to right gives 144 instead, which is why the order is the whole question.

What to say if they get stuck

  1. Anything inside brackets is a parcel. It has to be opened before the rest of the line can move.
  2. Multiplying and dividing happen before adding and subtracting, however far along the line they sit.
  3. Reading straight from left to right gives 144, which is not the same thing.
