One tiny letter change can turn a familiar word into a brand-new one. But there is a catch... every letter in the instruction matters. Miss even one, and your clever-looking answer can still be wrong.

First, lock your eyes on the base word. That is the word you must start and work from. Next, read the permitted operation exactly. It might tell you to add letters at the beginning, add letters at the end, or remove one named letter. Picture the base word in a fixed tray. The supplied letters sit beside it like puzzle pieces. Move only the pieces the instruction allows. Keep their stated order and position. Do not swap letters around, because that would make an anagram. Then read the result aloud and check that it is a real word. When letters are supplied to add, do a letter audit. Point to each supplied letter inside your answer. A plausible word is not enough - you must use ALL the letters you were given.

Let's work through an example. Here is the full question. The base word is C, A, R, E: care. The instruction says, add F, U, L, in that order, to the end. Form one valid new word. Start with care. Its letters stay together: C, A, R, E. The operation tells us to add, not remove. So three empty spaces appear after the E. Place F in the first space, U in the second, and L in the third. Now blend the letters: C, A, R, E, F, U, L... careful. CAREFUL is a real word, and it uses every supplied letter in the correct place. Writing carer would sound possible, but it ignores F, U, and L, so it fails the instruction. The explicit answer is careful.

Remember: keep the base, follow only the supplied operation, then check every given letter appears exactly where it should. Read the new word aloud, audit it once more, and choose your answer with confidence. You have the method!
