A single empty space can hide... one tiny letter. Choose carefully, and a jumble suddenly clicks into a real word. But here is the twist: a word that merely looks possible may still be wrong. Every supplied letter must earn its place.
When you see a letter gap, first read the rule. It may give a meaning, a word length, or letters that must all be used. Keep those clues beside the word. They are not decoration - they are your CHECKLIST. Next, test one letter in the gap. Then read the whole word from the beginning, slowly. Ask two questions. Is it a genuine word? Does it satisfy every clue? If either answer is no, lift that letter out and try another. Watch out for a tempting trap. You might spot a familiar word but leave one supplied letter unused, or ignore the stated meaning. That does not count. Circle each supplied letter as you use it, so none can quietly disappear.
Let's work through an example. The question says: Use every supplied letter, in the order shown. Complete C, R, blank, N, E to make a five-letter word meaning a tall lifting machine. Which letter belongs in the blank? Start with the meaning. A tall lifting machine is a crane. Now match crane to the pattern: C, R, blank, N, E. The first two letters are C and R. The last two are N and E. So the missing position must hold A. Place A in the gap. The letters now read C, R, A, N, E: crane. We have used every supplied letter, kept the order, matched the five-letter length, and matched the meaning. The answer is A. Notice how we checked all four conditions, not just whether crane looked like a word.
Remember: read the rule, test a letter, read the whole word, then check every supplied letter and clue. Do that carefully, and the missing letter has nowhere to hide. You can solve these with confidence!
