Imagine sixty shiny stickers sitting in front of you. Someone asks for twenty-five per cent. That sounds like a tricky calculation... but what if those three words are hiding one tiny, familiar fraction? Spot it, and the answer appears fast!
Per cent means out of one hundred. Here are one hundred counters in ten neat rows. Ten per cent is ten counters out of the hundred. Fifty per cent is fifty counters, or half the whole group. The percentage tells you how much of the complete quantity to take. Some percentages have useful fraction partners. Fifty per cent is one half. Twenty-five per cent is one quarter. Ten per cent is one tenth. So, when you see a familiar percentage, swap it for its fraction partner... then find that fraction of the quantity. But take care. The parts must be EQUAL. One quarter means dividing the whole amount into four equal groups, not four groups of different sizes. And never just remove the words per cent. Twenty-five per cent does not mean twenty-five times the amount. It means twenty-five out of every hundred.
Let's solve the sticker question properly. What is twenty-five per cent of sixty? First, recognise the percentage. Twenty-five per cent is one quarter. So our question becomes: what is one quarter of sixty? Same question. Much friendlier numbers. To find one quarter, divide by four. Picture the sixty stickers sharing equally between four boxes. Sixty divided by four is fifteen. Each box receives exactly fifteen stickers, so every part is the same size. That equality is what makes each box one quarter. Therefore, twenty-five per cent of sixty is fifteen. Let's check. Four equal groups of fifteen rebuild the whole sixty: fifteen, thirty, forty-five, sixty. Perfect! We found the percentage by using its fraction partner, and the four equal parts confirm the result.
Remember: match a familiar percentage to its fraction, then find that fraction using EQUAL parts. Half for fifty per cent, a quarter for twenty-five per cent, and a tenth for ten per cent. You've got the pattern... now percentage questions have nowhere to hide!
