Four event cards are jumbled. Only one order matches the passage. Can you find it without choosing the detail that merely sounds right? The words hold the answer... so become a timeline detective.
First, spot each action the writer explicitly describes. Turn it into a short card, keeping its important detail attached. Read down the passage. Place each new card after the previous one. Record what IS stated, not what usually happens. Next, circle time clues: first, then, after, later, before and finally. Watch carefully: after points backwards to an earlier event. In "After packing her bag, Mina left," packing comes before leaving. Link every card to the exact words that prove it. Nearby details can tempt you. Sensible inferences can too. Reject both unless the passage states the event. Sequence asks WHEN events happened, not why.
Let's work through an example. Read this passage: "Leila tied her shoelaces and picked up a basket. First, she gathered three ripe apples. After placing them in the basket, she followed the path to the pond. She sketched a duck, then returned to the gate. Finally, she gave the apples to her grandfather." Put these four events in passage order: Leila followed the path; Leila gave away the apples; Leila gathered the apples; Leila sketched a duck. Begin with the earliest listed event. "First, she gathered three ripe apples" proves gathered the apples is number one. The basket appears earlier, but picking it up is not one of our choices. Do not swap in that nearby detail. Now use "After placing them in the basket". Leila follows the path after gathering the apples, so followed the path is number two. Next, "She sketched a duck" gives number three. "Finally" proves gave away the apples is number four. The answer is: gathered the apples, followed the path, sketched a duck, gave away the apples. Each card has exact evidence. No guessing was needed.
Build cards from stated events, order them with time clues, and prove each position from the passage. Follow the words... and your timeline will stay true.
