11/20 as a decimal

The quick way is to make an equivalent fraction with a bottom of 100, because hundredths can be written straight down as a decimal.

1. 20 × 5 = 100.
2. Do the same to the top: 11 × 5 = 55.
3. So 11/20 = 55/100, which is 55 hundredths.

55 hundredths is written 0.55: the last digit goes in the hundredths column.

You can also divide the top by the bottom. Short division gives the same answer:

1. 20 does not go into 11, so write 0 and a decimal point, then carry the 11 over as 110 tenths.
2. 20 goes into 110 5 times, remainder 10. Write 5, and carry the 10 to make 100.
3. 20 goes into 100 5 times exactly. Write 5.
4. The remainder is 0, so the division stops: 11 ÷ 20 = 0.55.

Every twentieth is 5 hundredths: 11/20 is 11 × 5 = 55 hundredths, which is 0.55.

11/20 sits between 1/2 (0.5) and 2/3 (0.666...). It is closer to 1/2.
