How to turn 1/100 into a decimal
The quick way is to make an equivalent fraction with a bottom of 100, because hundredths can be written straight down as a decimal. 1/100 already has that bottom.
1 hundredth is written 0.01: the last digit goes in the hundredths column.
You can also divide the top by the bottom. Short division gives the same answer:
- 100 does not go into 1, so write 0 and a decimal point, then carry the 1 over as 10 tenths.
- 100 goes into 10 0 times, remainder 10. Write 0, and carry the 10 to make 100.
- 100 goes into 100 once exactly. Write 1.
- The remainder is 0, so the division stops: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01.
