A story can be about a lost football, yet its theme might be something much bigger. How can one small event carry a message about life? Look beyond what happens... and discover what the whole passage helps you understand.

The topic tells you what the passage is about. The theme is the broader idea developed through events, choices and changes. It is often a message you could apply beyond that story. Friendship, courage and honesty are topics. 'Real friends help when things become difficult' is a theme. Build it from a pattern. First, notice what the character faces. Next, track what they do and what changes. Then ask, 'What does this pattern suggest about people or life?' Your answer must fit the beginning, middle and end - not just one eye-catching moment. Be careful. A nearby detail can sound convincing, and a familiar saying can sound wise. Neither is enough. Point to several linked clues. If your proposed theme cannot be supported across the passage, it is only a plausible guess.

Let's work through an example. Read this passage. 'Maya's model bridge collapsed twice. Each time, she studied the broken joints and rebuilt them. On the third attempt, the bridge held the heaviest weight in class. Maya smiled and wrote every failed design in her notebook.' Which theme is developed across the passage? Start with the pattern. Maya fails, investigates, rebuilds, then succeeds. Her notebook shows that even the failed designs have value. These clues appear across the whole passage. So the theme is not merely, 'Maya built a bridge.' That is the main event, not the broader message. A strong answer is: 'Mistakes can help us improve when we learn from them.' Check it. The collapses provide the mistakes. Studying and rebuilding show learning. The stronger final bridge shows improvement. Every stage supports the same idea, so the answer is evidenced, not guessed.

Remember: a theme is the broader idea the whole passage develops, so follow the pattern, gather clues from across the text, and prove your answer. You can spot the message beneath the events!
