Two tiny letters can hide two completely different words. Spot St beside a church, and it may not mean the same thing as St beside a road. The sentence holds the clue... can you catch it? Watch the letters open up. St Mary's becomes Saint Mary's, while King St becomes King Street. Same abbreviation. Different context. Different full form.
An abbreviation is a shortened way of writing a word. To expand it, replace the short form with its conventional full form. Keep every other word exactly where it is. You are opening one folded word, not rewriting the whole sentence. First, read beyond the abbreviation. Nearby nouns tell you what fits. In St Anne's School, the name Anne's points to Saint. In Market St, the place name points to Street. Context chooses the expansion. Here is the trap. Do not expand St as Street every time just because you have seen it on signs. And do not alter capitals or add extra words. Test the full form inside the original sentence, then check that its meaning sounds right.
Let's work through an example. Here is the question. Rewrite the sentence, replacing the abbreviation St with its full form: The choir will perform at St Luke's Church on Saturday. You must change one abbreviation only, and the finished sentence must keep the original meaning. Start with the words around St. Luke's is a person's name, and Church confirms that this is a saint's name. So Street would make nonsense: Street Luke's Church. The context selects Saint. Now replace only St. Keep the capital S because Saint remains part of the name. Remove no other word. Add no new punctuation. The complete answer is: The choir will perform at Saint Luke's Church on Saturday. Read it once more. The meaning is clear, and the sentence is unchanged apart from the expansion.
Remember: expand the abbreviation that the context proves, then leave everything else alone. Read the finished sentence, trust its meaning, and you will make the hidden word appear with confidence!
