Turning a figure without flipping it

Watch what happens to the figure when you rotate 90 degrees clockwise.

Turning by a quarter-turn clockwise carries every corner the same way round the centre, so the figure keeps the same handedness - a flipped copy is a different figure, not a turned one.

  2. turned 180° clockwise
  3. flipped, with no turn
  4. turned 90° clockwise

Answer: turned 90° clockwise

How you get there

Turning by a quarter-turn clockwise moves every corner the same way round the centre, which means the answer keeps the figure the same way round; the flipped option swaps left for right, so it is a reflection and not a turn.

Why the other answers tempt

A mirror image can look like a turn at a glance - check which side each corner ends up on.
