How you get there
A cube has three pairs of opposite faces, so fixing the lid fixes the base too. The circle is not two steps along a straight line from the star, so the counting trick says nothing here - but folding the net closes the two of them onto opposite sides of the cube all the same. The two-dots shares a hinge with the star, so it folds up to touch it instead.

On a cross-shaped net the four arms fold up into the four walls, the middle becomes the floor and the tail flips over to become the lid. Faces two steps apart in a straight line end up facing each other: middle↔tail, and the two arms across from each other. Faces that touch in the net can never be opposite - they share a hinge, so they meet at a corner.
