Adding up the distance round a shape

Esme walks right round the edge of this shape. What is the perimeter?

Every side of this square is marked in centimetres.

  1. 18 cm
  2. 24 cm
  3. 36 cm
  4. 12 cm

Answer: 24 cm

How you get there

Adding every side gives 6+6+6+6=24 cm, so the perimeter is 24 cm. The 36 cm² of space inside is the area, which is a different measurement.

Why the other answers tempt

The space inside the shape is its area; the perimeter is only the distance around the edge.

If they are stuck, say this

The perimeter is the distance all the way round the outside, so add every side length, including the short ones, and count each side once.

A compound shape has no area formula of its own, so you make one: slice it into rectangles, find each area with width × height, and add. Perimeter is a different animal - it is the distance an ant walks all the way round the outside, so the cut you drew does not count. That is why area and perimeter almost never match.

  1. Step 1. Slice it. Cut the shape into two rectangles, then add their areas.
  2. Step 2. The ant walk. Walk the ant right round the edge. How far did it travel?

What to say if they get stuck

  1. Drag along one of the faint grid lines inside the shape to make your cut.
  2. A good cut leaves two neat rectangles - no L-shaped leftovers.
  3. Area adds up when you cut. Perimeter does not: cutting makes new edges that were never on the outside.

What usually goes wrong here

  • Multiplies side lengths when boundary length is required.

This is the wrong answer 11+ papers are built to offer, so it is worth watching for directly: a child who does this will look confident and still lose the mark. If it keeps happening on calculate perimeter, the fix is the misunderstanding rather than more questions.
