Year 7 is the first year of Key Stage 3. Key Stage 3 is Years 7 to 9, ages 11 to 14. Year 7 means a new building, a different teacher for each subject, a timetable and homework most nights. Places are offered on 1 March of Year 6, and Year 7 starts in September.

Maths in Year 7
- A fresh look at Key Stage 2 number work (fractions, decimals, negative numbers and written methods), so teachers can see where each pupil is.
- Algebra moves on from Year 6 missing numbers: letters for unknowns, simplifying expressions and solving simple equations.
- Many schools put pupils into maths sets during or after the first term, using CAT scores and early class tests.
English in Year 7
- A class novel, a poetry unit and often a first Shakespeare play or extract.
- Longer writing, such as stories, descriptions and letters, building on primary grammar rather than starting again.
- Reading lessons or library time in many schools, sometimes with a reading test to spot pupils who need support.
Tests and assessments in Year 7
There are no national tests in Year 7. Many secondary schools set a Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT4) or something similar in the first term, to help with sets and to spot pupils who need support. It needs no preparation. The first report and parents’ evening usually focus on how well your child has settled.

How to help at home in Year 7
- Help your child get organised: a timetable on the fridge, a bag packed the night before, and a regular time for homework.
- Check the homework planner or app together each week until the routine sticks.
- Ask what they learned, not what they did: explaining it back is good revision.
- Contact the form tutor early if anything worries you in the first term, from friendships to the journey to school.

What age is Year 7?
Children in Year 7 are 11 or 12 years old. Children in the same year group are born between 1 September in one year and 31 August the next, so each child turns 12 at some point during Year 7.

Some selective schools offer late entry, known as 12+ and 13+, into Year 8 or Year 9. Places depend on vacancies, so ask the schools you are interested in.
